EASTFORD, Conn. / Sept. 28, 2018 – The weather was ideal and the cause was noble, an ideal combination for a 5K fundraiser.
Toss in a few hundred excited runners – both young and old – and you have a recipe for success, which was the case on Sept. 15.
The “We Never Stop Fighting 5K” returned to Eastford, bringing with it blue skies and warm weather. The annual race also brought hope and assistance for families touched by cancer.
“I never imagined we’d get this much support from the community when we started this event seven years ago,” said Sean Krom, a real estate agent at Weichert, Realtors® – Suburban Properties who started the event in honor of his mother who passed away from cancer in 2009. “What started out as a small event to honor my mother, Marilyn Krom, has grown into something that is beyond belief.”
Several hundred runners participated in this year’s 5K race, which raised funds for two local residents who are currently battling cancer.
Dozens of kids also enjoyed the “Owen’s Kids Fun Run” to help nine-year-old Owen Budd find a living kidney donor for his father, Lincoln Budd. Owen’s father, a 30-year Eastford volunteer firefighter, lost one of his kidneys to cancer and the second is in crisis.
“People volunteered to be tested to see if they’re a match after hearing Owen’s personal plea to help his dad,” added Krom. “You can’t thank people enough for doing something so special to try and help Owen and his dad.”
Donations for the 2018 “We Never Stop Fighting 5K” are still being accepted. To donate, make checks payable to the Marilyn T. Krom Foundation with “Owen’s Run” in the memo line, and mail to Town of Eastford, P.O. Box 98, Eastford, CT 06242.
